Οι R.E.M. σχηματίστηκαν στην πόλη Αθήνα της Georgia το 1980 και αποτελούνται από τους: Michael Stipe (John Michael Stipe, γεν. 4 Ιανουαρίου 1960, Decatour, Georgia) φωνητικά, Peter Buck (Peter Lawrence Buck, γεν. 6 Δεκεμβρίου 1956, Berkeley, California) κιθάρα, Mike Mills (Michael Edward Mills, γεν. 17 Δεκεμβρίου 1958, Orange, California) μπάσο, Bill Berry (William Thomas Berry, γεν. 31 Ιουλίου 1958, Duluth, Minnesota) drums.
Τον Απρίλιο του 1980, οι τέσσερίς τους σχημάτισαν τους R.E.M. (αρχικά τους ονόμάζαν Rapid Eye Movement) και άρχισαν να κάνουν πρόβες σε μια παλιά επισκοπιανή εκκλησία που είχε μετατραπεί σε στούντιο. Τον Ιούλιο της ίδιας χρονιάς έδωσαν την πρώτη τους συναυλία εκτός Georgia και συγκεκριμένα στο Chapel Hill της Βόρειας Carolina όπου και γνώρισαν το μελλοντικό τους manager Jefferson Holt. Αν και είχαν επηρεαστεί θεωρητικά από το punk do-it-yourself ύφος, ο ήχος τους ήταν κοντά σε αυτόν των Byrds -ενεργητικό folk rock- με τα εκκεντρικά φωνητικά του Stipe να δίνουν το σήμα κατατεθέν τους.
Η πρώτη τεράστια επιτυχία των REM ήταν το "The One Ι Love" (Νο9), ένα τραγούδι που είχε θέμα την προδοσία, ωστόσο «παρεξηγήθηκε» παγκοσμίως ως ερωτικό. Το "The One I Love" περιεχόταν στο album "Document" (Νο10, το 1987) που ήταν και το τελευταίο τους στην ανεξάρτητη LR.S.
Οι R.E.M. ηχογράφησαν το πρώτο "πολυεθνικό" album το 1988 και είχε τίτλο "Green" (Νο12, το 1988). Από εκεί ξεχώρισε το single τους "Stand" (Νο6), ίσως το απλούστερο ως τότε κομμάτι τους αλλά και το "Ροp Song '89" (Νο86) που παρωδούσε τον κόσμο της δισκογραφικής βιομηχανίας. Το album "Dead Letter Office" (Νο52, το 1987) ήταν μια συλλογή με b-sides από την καριέρα τους στην I.R.S. και το "Eponymous" (Νο44 το 1988) μια συλλογή με τα singles τους από την ίδια περίοδο.
Το 1991, αφού επέστρεψαν από την εξαντλητική περιοδεία για το "Green", κυκλοφόρησαν το "Out Of Time" που έφτασε στο Νο1 και έγινε τριπλά πλατινένιο. Σε αυτό περιλαμβάνονταν τα singles "Losing Μy Religion" (Νο4), η μεγαλύτερη επιτυχία τους στον κόσμο με ένα εικαστικό video clip (σε σκηνοθεσία Μ. Night Shaymalan, σκηνοθέτη των κινηματογραφικών επιτυχιών "Sixth Sense" και "Unbreakable') που απαγορεύτηκε από τις ιρλανδικές Αρχές για τις αμφισβητούμενες ομοφυλοφιλικές εικόνες του και "Shiny Happy People" μια συνεργασία τους με την Kate Pierson των Β52's. Ακολούθησε το άλμπουμ τους "Automatic For The People" (Νο2, το 1992) ήταν πιο εσωτερικό και μελαγχολικό και έβγαλε επιτυχίες όπως τα "Drive" (Νο28), "Μan On The Μοοn" (Νο30) και "Everybody Hurts" (Νο29). Τα μέρη των εγχόρδων επιμελήθηκε στο album ο John PauΙ Jones των Led Zeppelin.
Από τα τελευταία χρόνια των 80's, οι REM έγιναν ακτιβιστές, προσκαλώντας την Greenpeace να τοποθετεί πανό και περίπτερα στις συναυλίες τους και συμμετέχοντας οι ίδιοι στην τοπική αυτοδιοίκηση της πόλης τους. Ο Stipe έκανε τακτικά δηλώσεις για το περιβάλλον, τα δικαιώματα των ζώων και τους άστεγους. Ο Stipe επίσης προώθησε και άλλους καλλιτέχνες, όπως ο ζωγράφος Reverend Howard Finster, ο σκηνοθέτης Jim McKay (με τον οποίον άνοιξε την κινηματογραφική εταιρία C-00) και ο folk τραγουδιστής Vic Chesnutt.
Το 1994 επέστρεψαν στο προσκήνιο με το album "Monster" που περιλάμβανε και τη συνεργασία του Thurston Moore των Sonic Youth σε ένα κομμάτι. Τα singles που ξεχώρισαν από αυτή τη δισκογραφική δουλειά ήταν τα: "What's The Frequency Kenneth?", "Bang And Blame", "Strange Currencies", "Tongue" και "Crush With Eyeliner".
Όμως κατά τη διάρκεια της περιοδείας τους για την υποστήριξη του "Monster", ο Bill Berry κατέρρευσε επί σκηνής από ανεύρυσμα στον εγκέφαλο (την 1η Μαρτίου 1995 στη Ζυρίχη).
Μετά από την ανάρρωση του Berry, οι R.E.M. ηχογράφησαν το "New Adventures In Hi-Fi" που κυκλοφόρησε το 1996. Τα singles που ξεχώρισαν από εκεί ήταν το "Εbοw The Letter", το "Bittersweet Me" και το "Electrolite". Αυτό ήταν και το τελευταίο album με τον Bill Berry στη σύνθεσή τους..
Οι Rem είναι σίγουρα ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα συγκροτήματα ροκ και ενναλακτικής μουσικής στον κόσμο και έχουν αφήσει σαν περιουσία πραγματικά διαμάντια...ελπίζουμε και περιμένουμε ακόμα παραπάνω...γιατί οι οι Rem δεν σταματούν ποτέ....μη χάσετε το Το νέο video single τους Supernatural Superserious

R.E.M. is an American rock band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1980 by Michael Stipe (lead vocals), Peter Buck (guitar), Mike Mills (bass guitar), and Bill Berry (drums and percussion). R.E.M. was one of the first popular alternative rock bands, and gained early attention due to Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style and Stipe's unclear vocals. R.E.M. released its first single, "Radio Free Europe", in 1981 on the independent record label Hib-Tone. The single was followed by the Chronic Town EPin 1982, the band's first release on I.R.S. Records. In 1983, the band released its critically acclaimed debut album Murmur, and built its reputation over the next few years through subsequent releases, constant touring, and the support of college radio. Following years of underground success, R.E.M. achieved a mainstream hit in 1987 with the single "The One I Love". The group signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988, and began to espouse political and environmental concerns while playing large arenas worldwide.
By the early 1990s, when alternative rock began to experience broad mainstream success, R.E.M. was viewed as a pioneer of the genre and released its two most commercially successful albums, Out of Time (1991) and Automatic for the People(1992), which veered from the band's established sound. R.E.M.'s 1994 release Monster was a return to a more rock-oriented sound. The band began its first tour in six years to support the album; the tour was marred by medical emergencies suffered by three band members. In 1996, R.E.M. re-signed with Warner Bros. for a reported US$80 million, at the time the most expensive recording contract in history. The following year, Bill Berry left the band amicably, while Buck, Mills, and Stipe continued the group as a three-piece. Through some changes in musical style, the band continued its career into the next decade with mixed critical and commercial success. In 2007, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
